Taking to Instagram earlier today, Michel Ancel posted two images which showcased something only a handful of individuals have ever seen. The first of these images presented a Super Nintendo development cartridge sticking out of a PAL console. This photographic teaser was accompanied by a caption detailing Ancel’s excitement at seeing his unfinished work for the first time in several decades.
The image which followed displayed on screen what sat within this development cartridge - the rather different and unusual 16-bit outing of Rayman on the Super Nintendo. Although recognisable, this original Rayman conception features an odd looking protagonist compared to the one we know and love, along with an unfamiliar dark and alien world to explore.
While it’s yet to be known if Ancel will preserve this unfinished entity of Rayman or how playable it actually is, countless fans have flocked to his Instagram account to discuss the discovery and ask whether the game’s code has been backed up. The most interesting aspect of these photographs though is Ancel stating that the cartridge has laid dormant for 24 years - something which suggests Rayman was in development for a massive 3 years before it hit the shelves.**
